Meet the Candidates: Joan Maybury

Meet the Candidates: Joan Maybury

On November 6, 2023, Brooks Towers owners will elect three new members to the HOA board of directors. Joan Maybury is one of the four candidates running for the board this year.

Joan's Bio:

My husband Phillip and I made Brooks Tower our home when we moved here from Greeley in 2015. I grew up in Denver, went to East High School and then moved to Greeley to attend UNC’s Nursing Program. I wanted to be a nurse since I was young as I have always enjoyed helping other people. I had a distinguished career in nursing, especially obstetrical bedside nursing. Also, during my career, I managed more than 120 nurses and served as the Joint Commission officer for North Colorado Medical Center. I retired from nursing in 2015.

Currently, I volunteer at my church, at a homeless facility in Denver and I am on the Finance Committee here at Brooks. Ever since I made Brooks my home, I’ve had a strong pull towards the community with a desire to make Brooks the best home for all of us. If you give me the honor of putting me on the Board of Directors, I promise to work hard to gather your ideas, carry your ideas forward and place them in front of the Board. I want to use your ideas to improve our lifestyle here at Brooks Tower. We have so many opportunities to grow and I am eager to facilitate change for the betterment of our community.

I would love to hear your ideas and I am sure all of you have excellent ideas on improving our lifestyle here at Brooks Tower. We have many opportunities for growth, and I am eager to help facilitate changes for the betterment for all of us. I have friends that live in other downtown buildings, and many have systems in place in their buildings that I think would help OUR building to be more efficient, comfortable, and safer. Some of those ideas are:

  • Keypad entry versus a physical key and fob for entering our building and entering your unit.
  • Water detectors in your unit that set off alarms to owners and simultaneously to the maintenance department.
  • Enclosing our “front yard / courtyard,” as has been discussed in the past, such as tall gated fob entry wrought iron fencing, installed east and west of the Prospector, with plants and patio tables inside the enclosed courtyard.

As we all know, ideas cost money, but spending money just to spend money is never the responsible thing to do. The Board of Directors must always maintain fiscal responsibility and my commitment to you is that as your representative on the Board of Directors, I promise to make sure the Board of Directors always gets a bang for YOUR BUCK!

So, these are some of the ideas that excite me, and I promise as a Board member, to always remain open and receptive to you and your ideas. And don’t forget to Vote!

Quick BT News Interview:

How long have you lived in Brooks Tower? On what floor, and for how long?

My husband and I have been in brooks for 9 years. We were on the 23 rd floor for 6 years, and now on the 2nd floor.

What is your long-term vision for Brooks Tower?

I have friends that also live downtown, but in other apartment buildings. They have some technological benefits that we should have. So, I’d like to bring us up to certain safety and living standards, while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

What is an example of one way you've been involved in improving Brooks Tower?

My daughter had the Luxer package system. I presented Luxer to our Board and remained the contact person with the Luxer representative through the process of acquiring the package system. I’m also on the Communications Committee and Finance Committee here at Brooks

What are the biggest ways you would like to see Brooks Tower improved?

I would like us to go to a keyless / fobless system. Many other apartment buildings downtown have number codes for entry into the building - for both doors. Then a separate one for your unit. If you’re expecting company you can send them a code that expires in an hour or lasts all day. They can get into your building. Then you can either give them a different code for your door, that also expires, or greet them at the door.

What particular skills do you have that you can bring to the Brooks Tower board?

I like to problem solve. I also think I’m a good communicator.

If you are an owner at Brooks and you haven't already, vote here. You should have received an email with your elector ID and password.
